I bought a book (Lord forgive me but I forgot the title) of photography of African women. The photography is lovely but it's a bit grainy because of my scanner. I thought you guys might like the photos so I'm sharing them.

I know. Every time I write a story, I use a photo to help me picture what my characters look like. Every since I got this book, all my characters have looked like these women.

I have several of these

matted and framed in my home. I ran across some prints at a loc conference in Philadelphia a few years back and I think they are all SO beautiful.

I love these. Maybe I'm being judgemental by the pictures, but I am really loving how they can show their bodies and it doesn't have to be a sexual thing -- it's just an appreciation of their bodily beauty. It made me think about how you said the pictures "weren't work-safe" and the really conservative values Americans espouse -- these pictures can't be worksafe because even though this is how they live and work every day, it becomes eroticized in American culture just because parts of the body Americans deem as "taboo" are exposed.

The second picture was used on the front cover of my African Diaspora & the World book my first-year here at Spelman.

I understand what you mean about the worksafe. I didn't want to get anyone in trouble because they look at some titties at work but I can't see how people would view these pictures as vulgar or even porngraphic in the context they're in.

Very beautiful. So many of the photos look so... joyful. Like the person who is being portrayed has some sort of deep confidence and assurance of who they are and where they are in their body. I don't know if I am projecting there... hopefully you know what I mean. I just came from this extra-crunchy hippie yoga class and we did a lot of heart openers - don't mind me.

Luda was right

All the best women all reside in Africa!

Those women are so beautiful, sans makeup, botox, weave, Baby Phat etc...

I believe these come from the book, "Women of the African Ark." Pomegranate put out a calendar of these prints for a few years (and they still might).

this is a public post, so i mentioned/showed it to one of my friends on yahoo.

her first reaction to the first picture:

"gee, robinho, thank you for reminding that i don't have a clit anymore"

apparently the first picture is a post-circumcision picture. as my friend said "there's a reason she's not smiling".

(when i was at said friend's house, her mother, thinking that i was a suitor, showed me a similar set of necklaces that the mother said belonged to my friend. the second my friend saw them, she turned around and left the room -- she had gotten cut AFTER she'd had a few orgasms so she knows what she's missing.)

she had gotten cut AFTER she'd had a few orgasms so she knows what she's missing.)

And that's just...WRONG. The whole idea of female circumcision is wrong and illustrates the depth that some societies will go to in order to preserve male dominance. I've never really understood how a society can be successful is half of the population is oppressed. But then again...history has shown us that it does happen...

her eyes do look a little red.

How old was you friend when she was cut?

[info]lindito

September 5 2006, 18:17:51 UTC 5 years ago

she was 20.

she thought she could get out of it before she went to the usa but then her father died and her mother made her do it.

it's weird, because that happens a lot... father goes away to university in europe or whatever and sees the light wrt female cutting, and then says that he does not want that for his daughters... and then just when the girls think that they get to escape it, he dies.

of course, in a lot of cases, the reverse is true -- the mother works to make sure it doesn't happen but the something tragic happens so it does.

there are a lot of individuals who are against it... just not enough yet to skew the curve.

pictures are beautiful, and they just go to show the natural diversity in features, skin tones etc, that all equate to beauty that are found in africa.
