I bought a book (Lord forgive me but I forgot the title) of photography of African women. The photography is lovely but it's a bit grainy because of my scanner. I thought you guys might like the photos so I'm sharing them.

her first reaction to the first picture:
"gee, robinho, thank you for reminding that i don't have a clit anymore"
apparently the first picture is a post-circumcision picture. as my friend said "there's a reason she's not smiling".
(when i was at said friend's house, her mother, thinking that i was a suitor, showed me a similar set of necklaces that the mother said belonged to my friend. the second my friend saw them, she turned around and left the room -- she had gotten cut AFTER she'd had a few orgasms so she knows what she's missing.)

And that's just...WRONG. The whole idea of female circumcision is wrong and illustrates the depth that some societies will go to in order to preserve male dominance. I've never really understood how a society can be successful is half of the population is oppressed. But then again...history has shown us that it does happen...

How old was you friend when she was cut?

she thought she could get out of it before she went to the usa but then her father died and her mother made her do it.
it's weird, because that happens a lot... father goes away to university in europe or whatever and sees the light wrt female cutting, and then says that he does not want that for his daughters... and then just when the girls think that they get to escape it, he dies.
of course, in a lot of cases, the reverse is true -- the mother works to make sure it doesn't happen but the something tragic happens so it does.
there are a lot of individuals who are against it... just not enough yet to skew the curve.
