Nikki Giovanni actually taught the VA Tech shooter Cho Seung-Hui. She's describing him as full on mean (as opposed to crazy and mean) but honestly the more I read the more I wonder why this man was able to purchase a gun. Let's talk gun control laws blackfolk. Do you think they need to be stricter? Are they too strict?

I don't understand what you mean by this. There are legal criterior under which you can purchase a gun, he fit the criterior - over 21, no convictions, no mental health holds.

Actually he had been on a mental health hold. That's my point.

**Prepares to be flamed**
Personally I dont own a gun, I dont want a gun, and I dont like guns. But I feel that our right to bear arms has to be upheld. I dont like anyone taking away our rights for any reason (i.e. anti-flag burning, anti-cross burning, etc).

That being said we're treading a slippery slope if we start investigating peoples health history (mental health included) as a pre-requisite for gun ownership. I just dont trust the govt enough to have them all in my business.

Re: **Prepares to be flamed**
After the first sentence, we actually agree.

Accept though I would modify the mental health part. I don't find it kosher that the government could take away your rights simply on being admitted for observation. That type of commitment can simply be do to you going through a thang for a while or someone’s incorrect notion that you have a mental illness when you actually don't. It's like being arrested but not being convicted.

I think though if some determination of mental illness is made, then probably it's okay. Say someone with Schizophrenia. So I guess I'm saying it should be based on an actual determination of a relevant mental illness before the government can start taking away people’s rights.

If someone's just committed for bout of depression; maybe a short term hold of a few months, but you shouldn't have your rights taken away because of that.

I think it's slightly amusing and mildly annoying
that blackfolk actually think that Constitutional "rights" apply to them in this KKKuntry.

Duh, less guns=less gun violence. Maybe bombings will take off. Arsenic poisonings? But there is really no reason that folks need to have guns. Cops will still shoot you, as will other folks. Blackfolks aren't less likely to die as a result of gun violence with our current laws, maybe we should try something new.

I understand that for the majority of Americans (I'd previously thought mostly white, I guess not) the right to have a gun whether they exercise it or not is worth tens of thousand of lives a year. YAY folks, I guess we have come up . . . . . we can be as foolhardy and short-sighted as our WHITE forefathers. Well, actually, my people didn't get here til 1965.

Reading what Giovanni had to say was interesting, but I was troubled by her comment that

"I know we're talking about a troubled youngster and crap like that, but troubled youngsters get drunk and jump off buildings; troubled youngsters drink and drive," she said. "I've taught troubled youngsters. I've taught crazy people. It was the meanness that bothered me. It was a, really, mean streak."

First, troubled people act out in all kinds of ways. Yes they often fuck themselves up, but they can also drag people down with them. Also, having a mean streak doesn't mean that you dont' also have a serious mental problem.

This guy sounds like he had a host of problems, including not understanding how to intearct with people in a normal or appropriate fashion. So do a lot of people at college. He had a mean streak, so do a lot of people.

He was clearly a disturbed person.

I'd also say taht getting committed is usually for "are you in immediate danger of harming yourself or others." If a psychiatrist thinks you're mentally disturbed, but unlikey to harm anyone in the near future, they don't have the ability to hold you.

i don't have the knowledge to fully attack this question, but I don't think there's ever such a thing as being too sure when it comes to who has and who doesn't have a gun. right to bear arms and all that, but sometimes i really feel like that amendment is outdated. but like i said, i don't really know enough about gun control laws to give an informed opinion. i'm just really against guns in general so i'm completely biased on the issue.

I like guns. That said, I don't think anyone should have them. As my good friend said, you can't stop the crazy, but you can limit the damage done. An angry person with a knife can do way less damage.

There of course needs to be stricter gun control laws. I know that when my boyfriend was around 17, he went to a gun show. One of the sellers knew he was 17 and still offered to sell him a gun. Its so incredibly easy, its ridiculous.

I understand buying rifles and shotguns because you want to feel like if it ever came down to it, you would have some line of protection between you and the government.

Dude, if someone honestly thinks their bitty rifle and shotgun is going to protect them from the government (which is managed to fuck us all without firing a single shot), they deserved to get nuked.

Now I know lots of people don't like Michael Moore's style of filmmaking--but Bowling for Columbine is really the best primer to understand violence and the roles of guns in our society.

He may be in your face old school muckracker...but unfortunately this is the only way for corporations to be held accountable.

Though I do *not* recommend a confrontational advocacy approach for poc......

Honestly...I think that the term "gun control" is something of an oxymoron. Well, maybe not the term, but the philosophy.

We have gun control laws to help keep guns out of the hands of those who aren't supposed to have them. Yet, DESPITE these laws, the very same people whose hands we're trying to keep guns out of are the VERY same people going around shootin' folks. BUT, because of the gun control laws/bans, the people who feel like they might NEED a gun can't get one.

I'm not going to lie...I want to learn how to use a gun. My grandmother believes that it is time for me to learn how to use one. If it was up to her, I'd probably inherit her gun (she doesn't leave the house without one). I would definitely take all the gun safety classes I need to. Hell, if y'all wanna make me take TWO YEARS worth of classes, cool, I'll do it. Need to do a background check and a psychological profile, cool, I'll do it.

Here is the funniest part of this
More hand gun laws or restrictions are not gonna stop a crazy muhfugga from doing what crazy muhfuggas do.

What Ice cube say in that song long ago?

So what they do go and ban the AK?
My shit wasn't registered any fucking way

More gun laws just gonna make more under the table gun deals. The focus instead needs to be on why everyone in this fucking country is so angry. If more money was spent on teaching people how to communicate with other human beings than the idea of gun control would be irrelevant.

Plus if you believe in natural selection then hey, it is what it is and the most fit will survive. And if you believe in god then hey, this kind of thing is all in his plans.

i think everyone who is allowed to have a gun should get training and a mental health check. i'm sorry, but there's just too many hotheaded kids and adults who don't need access to a gun. and if you fail the training, you don't get to have a gun, and you have to wait to apply again. we have the same restrictions for driving, why not for owning guns?
