Dad Paints Daughter Nude

Dad Paints Shapely Daughter Nude...

Artist Li Zhuangping has sparked controversy in China by releasing a series of compositions in which he paints his 23-year-old daughter Li Qin nude, and usually in the company of a lion, a tiger or another member of the great cat family.

Part of the uproar can be attributed to China being a more modest society than ours when it comes to sex and nudity. In fact, some Chinese commentators have likened the paintings to "spiritual incest." Still, a father sizing up his daughter's nude body can make even the freest mind think twice.

After the jump,
check out some of Zhuangping's NSFW-ish "Oriental Goddess Mountain Spirit Series," while we debate whether it's thought-provoking art, or creepy, creepy kitsch.
It's art, I tell you
-- Li Qin has emphatically stated she will only model for her father. So if it wasn't for Li Zhuangping bucking China's societal mores, the world would have never been exposed to these striking images of Li Qin's delicate femininity contrasted with the menacing calm of a great cat.

-- Would you think any differently of the legendary nude statue Venus de Milo if we learned that its mystery sculptor was in fact Aphrodite's dad? (since Aphrodite was born from the disembodied manhood of Uranus, this would be unlikely, but we ask you to use your imagination.)

-- If Li Zhuangping was simply focused on exploiting his attractive offspring, he wouldn't have also painted the tiger nude.

It's exploitative and really cheesy

-- There is no denying the disturbing similarities between Zhuangping's compositions and the lush realism that was custom spray-painted on the
sides of creepy vans in the 1970s.

-- We are all for the art of the human form, but in these paintings, Zhuagping has clearly enhanced his daughter's bust size. Making it less a celebration of what God has created, and more akin to soft porn for confused zookeepers.

-- While Li Qin was 23 when these pictures were painted, she was 17 when she began modeling for her father. If the Beijing Olympics taught us anything, that means she may have been more like 14 the first time she got naked in her dad's studio.

I don't know...I don't know...he seems like a really smug bastard but then again...I don't know I don't know.

Wasn't there a post about some chick feeling OK with having kids with her dad? I don't know I don't know I don't know.

i think it's a stretch to compare this to that australian woman who was fucking her father.

he's an artist and most artists are known to be pushing the boundaries of whats 'acceptable'.

A little weird but at least she's a consenting adult.

Um. This is what I do for a living, and it's not all that sexual. IDK how I'd feel about modeling for my dad, but then, he's an accountant. If I grew up with an artist for a father, it might not be a big deal. IDK? Sally Mann?

Definitely not anything close to incest.

LMAO. Knowing my dad, he'd hesitate, look like he was drawing something very precisely (without actually looking at me), and it would turn out to be a bunch of equations, an estimate of my yearly salary and a variety of tax shelters from which to choose.

ya, i don't think posing is sexual at all. i just it kind of eeps me that it's her dad. and i don't even necessarily think he was getting a woody off it or anything...it's just kind of...eepy.

I'm not going to lie-- it's a little eepy to me, too. But only because I imagine my dad and the awkwardness *that* would involve (it would be 100x worse for him, I'm sure). I think it would be different if he were an artist-- for one, I'm sure she grew up with naked models all over the place, like it was no thing. They probably walked around the house naked all the time-- who knows?

That brings up a question-- what if we knew she and her whole family were nudists? Would that make it less "creepy?" It would certainly make it seem *even less* sexual to me-- it'd be just like if he painted her clothed. I don't think the psychological reality of their situation is all that far from the nudist scenario.

good point! i knew i could be open minded about that if just persuaded further! yes, it's much like a nudist family. not to mention that she probably does see herself as another model. it's still a little eepy to me, but like you said, my dad's a bus driver, so I've never had to consider it. he's a photographer too, but he's only been doing that for 5 years and really? we're close enough lol.

I hear that, but the way the water is splashing isn't all that organic to me-- it actually suggests to me that he is trying to hide her crotch, give her modesty.

the 2nd to last line quoted in this post.

I didn't click the link b/c I do want to go to sleep in the next 10 minutes and I don't have the time lol. But i want to go back and read it tomorrow, maybe i'll understand better. The first pic is not bad at all, the 2nd one creeps me the fuck out.

I too have a great dad relationship. We just spent the entire day together. But i mentioned the word "vagina" in conversation (not my own, the kidney-vag surgery) and it resulted in him covering his ears and singing "lalala" as he hightailed it to another room LOL. sooo. it's normal that once a girl reaches puberty and beyond, her body becomes private to her and displaying it, sexually or not, to opposite sex family members is taboo. And I think that's an A-OK standard to live by. I'm not condemning what boundaries they cross, but I am squicked out by it.

Ha, I was wondering if someone was going to bring up Sally Mann, because she definitely came to mind. I don't know how she's any less creepy on first glance, considering her children were underage at the time except for that her photos are pretty much perfection. This here, though? Complete shit. The question of intent is what's important, I think.

You're talking about intent, but with this guy, you're talking about his product... Are you saying something about his intent?

gross, and it does remind me of those creepy 70's bands...i'm trying to be open minded and say, "it's just art" but...eh... i'm trying.

Some people kiss close family on the mouth. Some people feel perfectly fine sharing a bed with their parents well into adult hood. I would relate that closely to this. It looks wierd to some but is perfectly acceptable to others because they *know* there's nothing sexual about it all. If this was a mother painting her daughter nude and decided to enhance her curves it would probably be viewed differently as well.

Unless she speaks out and says she was molested while he was painting her nude before she was an adult, and the abuse is continuing, I have no problem with it.

Well, I'm pretty sure that artists start painting nudes in art class and there doesn't have to be anything sexual about it. We're so used to sexualizing the naked body that this seems strange, but while I would feel uncomfortable posing nude for my dad...it's like i_dreamed_i_was said. I'm uncomfortable talking to my dad half the time. Were he a different kind of person, and an artist, possibly a different story.

I don't know. Beyond the velvet painting-esque feel to them, I'm not too disturbed. My uncle was a painter and painted me all the time. My mom is a photographer and photographs me all the time. No, I wasn't naked, but I'm not sure I see much difference. Plus, she's grown so I don't see anything especially exploitative about it (I do see creepy, but that's just a taste level thing).

Add me to the "not that serious" quadrant of voters here. The first one is beautiful. Nothing sexual about it at all, so I don't see much incestuous. The second is a bit sexual in nature, yea, but nothing that out there.

Yeah, I think that's what got me. It wasn't the fact he painted her because I don't see anything really icky...it's just his damn face and why did he have to make the boobs so big?
