Is Oprah Pulling a Bill Cosby

I have a love/hate relationship with Oprah Winfrey. In case yall didn't know she officially opened up her $40 million Girls Leadership academy in South Africa which I think is great. I just wish she hadn't made this comment to the media.

“I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools [in the U.S.]. If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”

As much as I respect you Miss O, I believe this is an American values problem, not limited too, or the SOLE responsibility of those students you've "visited" in inner city schools here in America. Yes there is some truth to your statement, but at the same time you cannot turn a blind eye to the horrific condition of our inner city schools, the institutional racism and defacto segregation that keeps them in such condition, and a general lack of emphasis on education in marginalized and immigrant communities. As someone who rides the NYC subway every day, I see the need for an Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in Harlem..

As a women viewed by 140 million people daily, shapes popular culture, and is viewed as a credible news source...This was irresponsible of you.

To all the people in America both white and black (majority of which are white) that have moved their kids to private school and have abandoned public education...after reading this quote, can you give them a good reason as to why they should invest or voluntarily increase their property taxes to support kids who "just want ipods"..

America needs you too ma...

I was just about to post something like this, but I'm glad you did it, because I would've been a lot more hateful. She's lost her goddamn mind as far as I'm concerned.

honestly, when i read that a day or two ago, i was a little mixed up in how to feel. i agree with her 100% about kids not taking education seriously, and at the same time, the educators aren't taking it too seriously either (in some places anyway), that moves up to the government. the red tape that goes into getting money to where it belongs is amazingly tangled and i can see it being frustrating that if she put all that money into this and all that bs to get thru it, and these kids not appreciated it, i'd be hella pissed about that. at the same time i feel, "you won't know unless you try"...

Wasn't this brought up already?
All snarkiness aside, Oprah like everyone else is neglecting the larger picture.

The inner city is simply suffering from the same materialism the rest of the US is facing but their lack of resources exacerbates the problem. Since the same society that promotes this ideology is lining Oprah's pockets (can't we all just see Apple's newest item on her "Favorite Things" episode come Christmas?) I doubt she'll have the foresight to see the issue better yet address it herself.

Re: Wasn't this brought up already?
You know? She's the one giving away cars and shit and then acting shocked--shocked!--that kids in the ghetto want shiny things like the ones she gives to (and sells to--hello, product placement!) to her mostly white, suburban audience.

a couple of thoughts..
1) Its Oprha's money, she can do whatever the hell she wants to with it.

2) Oprah has giving millions away in scholarships and programs right over here in the states.

3) The education situation in South Africa is a tad bit more dire than it is in the states. Yes we have some shitty public schools, but we also have some good ones. And at least education is free and available to every citizen (and non citizen too).

Oprah seems to have forgotten that she is in a country where consumerism is the main goal. Terrorist attack? President says "keep on shopping folks". War? President says "keep on shopping folks". TV tells you to buy buy buy. Your worth is based on what you own in this country and she should know that.

In fact, I'm not sure how she could forget that since she is a cog in that wheel. Her "give away" shows don't give college educations to poor kids, they give laptops and Ipods to people who may or may not be able to purchase them themselves anywa.

i'm not trying to be snarky or anything, but she Oprah did forgo her big "Favorite Things" show this year and gave the audience $1000 for her "Pay it Forward" challenge instead. i know there's a bigger picture that you're discussing, but i thought that was a nice idea that she chose to go with this year.

The Criticism Immunity List

#1. Poor black people: because there's nothing someone can do to midigate there own circumstance even if there's a system them against. One should not take an active roll in their own progress. A preson's life is not their own responsibility.

Not that Oprah gives a flying rat's ass...
So who's gonna e-mail these many posts to her simple ass. Better yet, how about someone make a site/messageboard dedicated to why Oprah needs to shut the hell up.

If the rich were being taxed the way they were supposed to? Wouldn't need private donors to step in. Especially not in the area of education.

Whatever happened to having a good *free* public education provided by the gov't? Hello?! smh

Jesus. Stop with the games about who is Oliver Twist enough to deserve saving. If I wanted to see that I'dve rented Dangerous Minds.

i am angry. i watched the opening of the school on the 7.00 news.
dear oprah

"In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

really? wow. i didn't know that my stepson wasn't south african. because that is ALL the asks for, spoiled brat motherfucker.

(and it's precisely because he does ask for all of these things that he's not going to get it. my boyfriend and i have already started deprogramming him, and he is hating every minute of it. that said, he will be living in a house with FOUR computers in it, which is rare, even in america, much less the rest of the world.)

oprah, sistagurl, listen. even the slums in this place have a materialism hierarchy, and if you spent more time in them or with people from them rather than in the sandton fucking intercontinental hotel, you would know this. i've had enough cellphones stolen by people here who have sold them to get ipods and sneakers and all the other things you don't think people on this side ask for.

we get american television here. the materialist bug is alive and well. honest. it is. clearly you're too hung up on the "i'm doing something in africa" thing to notice.

and, to be honest, if you really needed to do something in "africa" you should have gone to zambia or nigeria or ghana. no, wait, where you *really* should have gone is angola, or mozambique or centrafrique -- but i don't think you speak french or portuguese, and somehow i don't think you would have made the time to take malaria pills, get typhoid shots or any other booster.

you went the easy route, went to joburg -- a city sitting on top of one of the largest gold mines in the world. too easy. if you wanted to do it in a south african city... you should have gone to the nearest big city to either the transkei or the ciskei... east london or port elizabeth. hell, mandela is FROM port elizabeth (there's a reason that it's called the nelson mandela bay municipality) and for as much as you were riding his jock about "ooh i'm glad to be doing this in south africa" you could have at least done it in his home town. why do this in soweto when you could have done it in soweto-on-sea?

have you been to the eastern cape, lady? i have. and there's a reason that 100,000 people a year are moving from there to the squalid squatter camps in cape town. but do you know what? the squalor of site b in khayelitsha is 50 times better than some of the sites in the eastern cape.

before you start to wax lyrical about "africans appreciating shit more", what is the deal with the fact that you are making these girls get tested for hiv? are you going to chuck any of them out if they are positive? i would totally be not surprised if you did.

get a clue. hou jou mond op before you say something dumb.

love,

me.

your big magnanimous gesture

Yeah, and those dark girls going to Oprah's school were going to get their 5 digit check for their share of the gold royalties tomorrow. The checks are in the mail.
