O’Reilly And Beck Agree: We’re ‘Afraid’ To Have ‘A Lot Of African-American Friends’

Last night on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly led a discussion about Sen. Joe Biden’s (D-DE) racially-insensitive remarks toward Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). But instead of exlusively focusing on why the remarks were condescending to African-Americans, he said blacks should “feel sorry for us white folks here, because I’m telling you now I’m afraid to say anything. … White Americans are terrified.” Watch it: http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/06/oreilly-beck-articulate/

My Two Sense points out that CNN’s Glenn Beck hosted a similar discussion last night, during which he said, “I don’t have a lot of African-American friends, and I think part of it is because I’m afraid that I would be in an open conversation, and I would say something that somebody would take wrong, and then it would be a nightmare.” Watch it: http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/06/oreilly-beck-articulate/

As The New York Times’s Lynette Clemetson notes, “When whites use the word [articulate] in reference to blacks, it often carries a subtext of amazement, even bewilderment. … Such a subtext is inherently offensive because it suggests that the recipient of the ‘compliment’ is notably different from other black people.”

O’REILLY: Now you got to feel sorry for us white folks here, because I’m telling you now I’m afraid to say anything. You know, you’re an articulate guy, doctor, but I’m never going to say that. You’re a smart guy. Is that bad if I say you’re a smart guy? … Yes, absolutely, instead of black and white Americans coming together, white Americans are terrified. They’re terrified. Now we can’t even say you’re articulate? We can’t even give you guys compliments because they may be taken as condescension?

BECK: You know, Shelby, I don’t know if anybody else in the audience — oh, this is just going to be a blog nightmare over the next few days. But let me just be honest and play my cards face up on the table.

I was thinking about this just last week. I don’t have a lot of African-American friends, and I think part of it is because I’m afraid that I would be in an open conversation, and I would say something that somebody would take wrong, and then it would be a nightmare. Am I alone in feeling that?

Holy crap.
Maybe your racist cracka ass is afraid of what you say being "taken the wrong way" because your racist cracka ass is a bigot and if you weren't you wouldn't say that kind of thing anyway.
GAH! I hate these people so much.
"Wah, wah, wah...they won't let me say nigger, and now I can't say anything else either...wah, wah, wah!!!"

Oh yeah, that’s why. Crackas are something else; and people will try to come up with anything to justify themselves.

You don’t have a lot (read: almost any except bob who works with him, that he talks sports with and then considers him his token black friend) black friends because you’re comfortable in your privileged white world and you don’t want to disturb that with these other people that you’d have to bother to get to know something about, and who’s different perspective you would actually have to deal with instead of running from into your bastion of indifference.

I need a vacation from the McCrackersons . . .
I live in the northwest and these crackas are something fucking else. Umm, 3-4 white girls get allegedly beat up or pushed off their bikes in Portland by marauding bands of black teenaged girls. And all hell hath broken loose. Folks giving press interviews about whites being targeted and scared. Bike 'activists' talking about how "blacks seek crimes of opportunity". Never mind that other white folks are running them over and KILLING them.

Never mind that you can't get a reasonable decongestant in this state due the white meth heads. Folks drive over to Washington to get pseudoephedrine from behind the pharmacy counter. Methheads also steal metal street signs and copper pipes off people's houses for scrap. Local TV channel sponsor shred days where you can shred your shit for free. Because the meth heads run ID theft like it's no joke. But the McCrackersons want to give me the fish eye.

But they dearly love to tell me how I remind them of Whoopi "not because you're black or anything. . . " or how much they love OutKast, Dave Chappelle, fill-in-the-Negro.

Y'all might see me on the news wearing a diaper. . . . . .with tracks hanging off my head.

Keep me in prayer. Chanting. Whatever.

articulate?
I have gotten that crap. "Oh, you're so articulate!" And when I don't jump up and down with glee, then I'm one of those uppity negresses. Don't that darkie know that I paid her a compliment? OOhh or my favorite left handed remark. "You're bi racial right?" Only people who are mixed with white are allowed a grasp of the english language? GTFOHWT! (get the f*ck outta here with that.)

Re: articulate?
Articulate shouldn’t be used to describe any adult, black, white, brown or whatever. That’s something you say to a toddler.

Re: articulate?
Agreed. Telling someone they are articulate is also telling them that you expected them to be a dipshit before they opened their mouth.

White folks are a trip. They just let anything come flying out of their mouths.

At least we don't eat people.

O'Reilly and Beck are both well known for their ludicrous behavior, and this is just more of the same. They take the issue, and turn it around to make it completely about themselves.

Yes, absolutely, instead of black and white Americans coming together, white Americans are terrified.

O'Reilly's the last guy who should be talking about unity, when everyday, on his show and in his book, he pushes the idea that any American who doesn't think exactly the way he does, and hold the exact same beliefs as him, is evil , hates America, and needs to be taken down.

I love how uncomfortable whitefolk are about fear, considering they've dished it out for thousands of years.

How does that comeuppance taste? Does it burn?

I hate white people sometimes. Sigh...

There's a difference between merely calling someone articulate (which O'Reilly *claims* that he can't do anymore) and pairing their articulacy with their race (which is what Biden did).

Yes, they're trying to skirt and obscure that point to make the "ultra-sensative" negroes appear crazy and angry for no reason.
