Some early foolish for your Friday

I'm surprised I didn't see this up here yet. Boldface and commentary by me.

Fired for being ‘too attractive’

(This fugly still doesn't do her justice. Watch the video below)

Meet Debrahlee Lorenzana, the woman claiming to be “too hot” for Citibank.

The stunning 33-year-old New York banker is suing the U.S banking giant, claiming she was harrassed and then fired for being “too sexy”.

The tall, buxom brunette claims in the lawsuit that her manager told her to “refrain from wearing certain items of clothing, in particular, turtleneck tops, pencil skirts, fitted business suits, or other properly tailored clothing” (i.e., please wear a muumuu).

It appears the stunner’s killer bod was deemed a huge distraction by her hot-blooded male colleagues as soon as she sashayed into Citibank’s Chrysler Building branch in September 2008.

Bank supervisors reportedly told Lorenzana, who stands 1.70 metre-tall and weighs 56 kilos, that she should also refrain from wearing classic high-heeled business pumps as they drew attention to her curves.

But the Latina businesswoman claims it was not her wardrobe that was inappropriate; she says she shops at the same stores as her colleagues, citing Zara as an example. It was just the way her body looked in them.

When she protested that her female colleagues were dressed far more provocatively than she was, the bank allegedly told her those women were different because they were ”not as attractive”.

The single mother’s complaints of harrassment to Citibank’s Human Resources department resulted in a transfer to another branch where her circumstances worsened. She was eventually fired by the bank last year on grounds that she failed to recruit new customers

The lawsuit is making headlines around the world and has catapulted Lorenzana to instant superstardom. Her claims have now also triggered the fierce age-old debate on gender discrimination at the workplace.

After all, according to reports, Lorenzana had won praise and a few customer service awards from her previous employers including Bank of America and Metropolitan Hospital in Queens.

“She was punished because her male colleagues couldn’t handle their libidos,” her New York City lawyer, Jack Tuckner, told The New York Post.

Citibank responded by telling the New York press, ”We believe the lawsuit is without merit and will defend against it vigorously.”

The bank insists that the her dismissal was purely “performance-based”.

If the banker beauty is telling the truth and those outfits really were what she wore to work, her office style is impeccable.

But the lawsuit raises an interesting question – should a woman be fired for being too attractive? ('Interesting'? Do they mean 'idiotic'?)

Timothy, 27, an accountant, told Yahoo! Singapore, “If she’s wearing clothes that are too revealing, of course it can be very distracting. But as long as she’s dressed appropriately for work, I don’t see what the big deal is.”

Another 22-year-old female Citibank employee who declined to be named, added, “If she’s not violating the dress code, any distraction caused to the men in the office is really not her problem.”

Valid concerns or outright discrimination? You decide.

I hope she sues the hell out of them.

Hmm mmm.

If it is indeed the case, it's fucked up and I hope she gets every penny out of them.

That being said, am I the only one who thinks she's just 'okay' looking? Everyone keeps going on about how stunning she is, and I'm like, "Are we looking at the same person?"

well, it's her body they're calling stunning, not her face. not gonna lie, I'd probably stare a bit myself, but I'd have enough self-control to a) not make it obvious b) not make it her problem and most of all c) still get my damned job done.

Her body is... well proportioned.

I searched some pictures of her (like here) and she does have a sexy body. They show a picture of her in a nice-fitting top and a pencil skirt and she's hot. However, no hotter than any other attractive woman in the workplace with a nice body - I mean, she's not going to be stopping traffic with her sexiness, she's just got a well-proportioned body that we consider conventionally attractive. I don't see how it's so attractive that people can't get work done over this.

Oh, I agree she has a nice body. But people were talking about how gorgeous and stunning her face was.

I saw a few photos of her and how she dressed, and some of the outfits (to me) weren't very work appropriate, especially in a bank. But others were perfectly fine, and she looked nice in them.

The whole thing is ridiculous and wrong.

I want to steal that.

I don't think we're hearing all of the story, for better or worse.
Jun. 10th, 2010 07:02 pm (UTC)
Yeah. I'll have to see if I can find more info about this. It all sounds…suspect.

If men can't control themselves because of her then maybe THEY should be fired.
Jun. 10th, 2010 06:43 pm (UTC)
That's crazy talk!
Jun. 10th, 2010 07:03 pm (UTC)
LOL, and send the global economy from recession to a depression.

knowing how some of those crooks operate, the economy might recover if they fired them.

I'm am constantly in awe at the twists, turns and fucking leaps that people will take to avoid talking about how race and gender intersect in America.

Pictures I've seen of her standing sideways remind me of the pictures I've seen of the Hottentot Venus. Just saying.

I was tryna think of a way to work Sarah Baartman into my comment, but couldn't think of a Latina equivalent. But yeah, I see this exploitation/exotification of the "ethnic" female body going on too and it's weird and sad that she seems to play some role in perpetuating it to some degree (and I don't mean in an empowered sexy as I wanna be kinda way).

Okay, this story is all kinds of crazy and there are clearly so many threads to it. First of all, this is not really about her being too cute to be a banker, it's about harassment and somehow that keeps getting buried underneath all her supposed smokin' hotness. I've read that she thinks if she just weren't so goshdarn gorgeous she wouldn't have gotten harassed. Which is basically like saying, men harass women because they're pretty. And fugmos apparently don't have to worry about harassment. Which totally puts the onus on women and ignores that fact that "unattractive" women (however you define it) get harassed too!!! It's not about how we look, what we wear, or what we do.

It's about being a woman. Which is why I get just as much (if not twice as much) shit walking down the street when I'm in yoga pants, a scrubby tee and haven't washed my hair as when I'm dressed to the nines. Oh, this lady was also on some Discovery Health show about plastic surgery where she got multiple procedures. I smell famewhore. And while the onus is NOT on her for being harassed, her response is disappointing to say the least. She's now making it about her hot body and also throwing in some fun girl-on-girl hate too.

Thank you for voicing what I've been feeling while not quite able to name/able. The language of all of this is so problematic. Making sexual harassment a "pretty woman's issue." When it's not about attractiveness at all. Instead of just saying "I was sexually harassed" she's saying "they said I was too pretty!!" when that particular detail is *so* irrelevant.
Jun. 10th, 2010 08:42 pm (UTC)
I have a feeling that her "performance" issue was a "step off i'm not going to go out w/ you fools" issue.

this heffa need to keep it movin'.
